Overall Series Review (52 Episodes)
Fushigi Yuugi was an amazing anime created back in 1995. I’m a sucker for Shōjo, so this series may as well had been crack 😭
Fushigi Yuugi is about two high-school girls who are best friends getting sucked into a book called The Universe of the Four Gods. They are transported to a foreign land and have to face various obstacles. These obstacles may or may not change their lives and friendship forever.
DID I MENTION THAT WHATEVER HAPPENS IN THE BOOK HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE?!?!?
I enjoyed almost everything about Fushigi Yuugi. Some of the redundancy and carrying on that comes from older anime series was irritating.
Musicality was perfect. Character drama and plot twists all happening at once.
Everyone was beautifully drawn/animated, especially the Prince and Tamahome, but there’s just something about the ’90s anime aesthetic that just does it every time for me.
The reason I cannot and will not give this anime an A rating is due to all the focus on sexual assault and grape. After a certain point, it felt like overkill. I understand it’s part of the plot, but it felt excessive towards the end. That being said,
If you like Inuyasha, then you absolutely need to watch Fushigi Yuugi! Inuyasha pulled ALOT of inspiration from here (at least for the foundation), and that’s why I believe you’ll enjoy it.

Watch Fushigi Yuugi on Crunchyroll, on one of the streaming sites above, or among the Pirates.
